Parent and Family Engagement

Deweyville ISD is dedicated to promoting student achievement.  One of the best resources to achieve this goal is through the building of strong relationships and partnerships with families.  Research proves that students with involved parents and families are more likely to attend school regularly, earn good grades and high test scores, enroll in higher-level programs, pass classes and earn credits, graduate and attend a post-secondary education.  No matter a child’s background or socioeconomic status DISD wants to make school a better place for children to learn and grow by partnering with parents and families to escalate student success.  This Parent and Family Engagement webpage is designed specifically to connect, build capacity, and provide resources for parents, families and students.

We encourage you to take our SURVEY to let us know how we can better connect with our parents.

Parent and Family Resources

Below are the links to resources for your access, information and support for both yourself and your student.  These will be helpful throughout the school year and keep you connected with the latest information and events.

Events

Meet the Teacher:  Annual event before the first day of school at all campuses designed to provide orientation for students and parents about the school policies and procedures.  Everyone is invited and welcomed.  Refreshments are also provided as well as school supplies for those who need them.  Grade level and homeroom teachers familiarize the children and their parents about expectations for the coming school year.  School-Parent compacts will be available for the parents at this time.  All extracurricular activities and clubs are represented and students and parents may stop at booths to see what each club or organization has to offer in the education of each student.  This is our most popular and most attended event of the year.

Parent Teacher Organization:  The local Parent and Teacher Organization (PTO) works endlessly to partner with parents and school to help prepare students to be responsible engaged students by enhancing school life for students, teachers and parents.  The local chapter meets once a month alternating morning meetings and afternoon meetings to include as many parents and community members as possible.

Math/Reading Parent Night: (Elementary) Family nights are for learning a variety of strategies to help in educating your child in a particular subject area.  Sessions are led by the teachers who teach these subjects.  Many resources and tips are given to help ensure student achievement and success.  These meetings are conducted after school hours for the availability of more parents.

Library Night: (Elementary) All community members, students, parents and other family members are invited to a Night at the Library when we are open for everyone to visit and Scholastic Book Fairs are here for everyone to enjoy.

CCMR Night:  (JH/HS campus) showcases different programs of study within Lamar University College-Orange as well as our Military Partners.  Students and parents are able to communicate with the participants in helping to decide their route to take up to and beyond graduation.  Assistance is offered for FAFSA applications and registration. Texas Workforce Commission is also in attendance to help with gaining employment or assistance with the cost of dual credit or college courses.

Incoming 6th Grade Student & Parent Social: (JH/HS campus) Students and parents are welcomed in visiting the campus they will be attending the next school year. Administration, counselors, teachers and paraprofessionals are all available to be introduced and help go over expectations for the next year.  Clubs, organizations and extra-curricular organizations and groups are represented and introduced.  Students are able to do course selection and tour the facilities.

Freshman Parent & Student Ice Cream Social: (JH/HS campus) Students and parents are encouraged to attend to finalize freshman graduation plans and endorsement to be earned in their field of study.

Committees:

Deweyville ISD would like to encourage you to become engaged in your child’s education by joining one of our committees.  When school, home and community all work together it is of great benefit to our children.  If you are interested in participating in our Parent Involvement Committee, the District Improvement Planning Committee, either Campus Improvement Planning Committee or the SHAC (School Health Advisory Council) committee, please contact Kenzie Hogan, 409-746-2681or khogan@deweyvilleisd.com.
